Using picture books to explore identity , stereotyping, and discrimination

For this blog I chose to reflect on the article Using picture books to explore identity, stereotyping, and  discrimination  https://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/using-picture-books-explore?tab=4#tabs . I love when books are used to help students draw a deeper meaning into things and that's what drew me to pick this article. I like that this lesson plan is separated into different sections and allocated time is dedicated to each. Reading through I noticed that the sessions bounce off and correlate with one another even though different books are introduced in different sections and I think helps students reflect on the thinking about stereotypes and identity having those connecting pieces. I love how the lesson plan relies on a lot of student participation with answering questions and them giving their thoughts because I feel like this gives students a chance to reflect and gather all the ideas floating in their head about identity, stereotyping, and discrimination that they might not have thought about in depth before. This article has a very clear action part for the students in number 4 of session 8 which allows the students to say how'd they stop discrimination and what can they do s a class to take action. It is super important to not only inform about stereotypes, identity, and discrimination but to also have students think how they can prevent it by either not being the cause or being apart of the solution. Having students think about ideas way bigger than what affects them on a day to day basis is how we see change happen so quickly and I loved that this lesson plan included it.

  1. Hey Zion! I also love students using books to really deeply think about the meaning of it. I love this because every student might have a different interpretation of the text, pulling from their own experiences which I really appreciate. I agree that it is so important to inform about discrimination in order to stop it and even more importantly it is important for students to understand that they can stand up for it and be part of the solution as well.
